We've known this pub for a lot of years and it hasn't really changed in all that time. It's still a bit of a barn in the bottom of a tower block, the walls are still covered in the eponymous cartoons and the beer's still decent. Once a haven for the Fleet Street mavens, it's gone more mainstream, with a clientele largely made up of local workers. Decent enough pub food - a fish finger sandwich is always a favourite of ours - and three Cask Marque beers on the taps (Harvey's Best and Pedigree amongst them when we were in last). Karaoke nights, a jukebox and a pool table round out the entertainment. There's also tables outside on both sides of the pubs where you can enjoy the sunshine. And at least you can hear yourself think out there now - the incessant road works appear to have finally gone the way of the dodo.

The Cartoonist, until recently, had been a poorly run pub with little to recommend it. A few weeks ago a landlord / tenant of 30 years experience took over and it has considerably improved. The beer is well cared for and excellent. A particular novelty is the availability on Banks’s Bitter on tap, a Midlands brewed beer I haven’t seen before in London.

A good selection of food is on offer and priced to make it good value for the money.

The bar area is spacious with an additional basement bar and seating areas outside.

Graham, the publican, is friendly and welcoming.

A great pub, destined to get even better.
