The interior of this one was replaced with more modern furnishings a while back and even though the old layout did resemble Alf Garnett's front room, it was one of a kind and it was almost worth visiting the pub for that alone. Under new management from sometime last year, the emphasis now seems to be for live music nights to go along with the decent beer. We'll have to get along and see what those nights are like and let you know.

Charlie Butler has now been demolished.
Whether or not this is an improvement I'll leave to others as I never drank there.

In a neighbourhood with more than its fair share of identikit gastropubs, The Charlie Butler used to be a rare reminder of what pubs used to be like. Its walls were adorned with pictures of shire horses and old brasses, the like of which are more often found in your nan's front room. But along with this came the friendly, warm atmosphere of a real locals pub.

It's a particular shame, then, that this was given such an unsympathetic refurb. It's now dull and characterless - perhaps it's no surprise, then, that when we visited on a Sunday afternoon we were the only customers.

It's stopped doing food, too, which is particularly odd given its location.
