This really is a very fine boozer. The warm and friendly welcome that it offers is probably best appreciated on a chilly winter evening, but can be recommended all year round. There are two rooms, each of which has a calm and relaxed ambience. The smart front bar facing onto the street has a discreetly placed sports TV, although it doesn't intrude unduly - in fact it is often switched off. More prominent are the splendid, presumably Victorian, fixtures around the bar. Meanwhile the back room is quieter, decorated with prints and striped wallpaper, along with an impressive fireplace. The landlord oversees everything with a refreshingly competent approach: when the bar person began to get argumentative over the worst Bloody Mary in history (one part Worcestershire sauce: one part tomato juice) he put pay to any dramatics and the drink was duly changed. Overall though, the pub is simply pleasingly unpretentious, particularly given its location in the one of the first neighbourhoods to have pioneered the concept of the gastropub. Add a trio of well-kept ales and it becomes a great place to while away an afternoon.
