On the rat-run through South Croydon toward the Brighton Road, a little cut-through takes you into Junction Road, an otherwise anonymous side-street of nice but nothing-special terraced housing. On school and shopping runs, we've passed this pub so many times, over the years, and always meant to drop-in. So, finding ourselves nearby and looking for somewhere for a pint and a lunchtime bite to eat, we grabbed the opportunity. It augured well to see a bunch of Croydon's office girls, sitting at the tables in front and sharing a bottle of champagne; and we were not let down in our expectations as we came out of the sunshine into the cool dark interior. The Sceptre has a long corridor-like bar with tables and seating off to one side, opening out to a wider dining area. At lunchtime it serves food to a diverse crowd of office types, slinking away from work, and older folk out for an old fashioned pub lunch. We were made to feel very welcome as soon as we stepped through the door, and the service throughout our short visit was chatty and attentive. The Sceptre is a Fuller's pub and the beer and wine offer is their standard package, but it's all kept and served to a very high standard. The food menu is a bit better than basic and, in fairness, more than we'd expect in the area. And, if you're looking for gourmet, you're not going to find it in this neck of the woods. At the back of the pub is a small car park and garden area. it's a bit difficult to see where one stops and the other begins, but it is shaded with a lot of leaf and is a pleasant enough place to sit out and sip a pint. The Crown and Sceptre is certainly somewhere we're looking forward to investigate further, particularly for an evening drink and a longer stay.
