The De Beauvoir Arms is the latest incarnation of the Northgate. We popped in for a couple of beers last week. They had only just reopened after a subtle refurb that has made the place into slightly more of a pub and slightly less of a restaurant. Which in our opinion is a good thing.

Five real ales are on tap and a good selection of fizzy drinks are available. The menu looks good, we tried a bavette steak with lyonnaise potatoes, hollandaise and water cress for £14, which was delicious.

The De Beauvoir Arms is a great building, dating from 1854 and looks good inside and out. The pub has its own beer mats, which is a nice touch!

We really liked the place and will be back soon.

The Scapegoat must have visited a different De Beauvoir Arms as his very harsh comments bare absolutely no resemblance to the pub which operates in Southgate Road. The customer service is excellent; management and staff, very friendly and professionally attentive. Decent range of beers, lagers and real ales. The food offer is comprehensive, well made and well presented without being too pretentious. Judging by the increasing popularity of The De Beauvoir Arms and the diversity of its customer base, The Scapegoat's unhappy experience seems untypical and hopefully the pub go from strength to strength and continue to prosper as an execelent 'Local' for many years to come.

Nice building, great space with a reasonable selection of beers, and wines from all the wrong regions. Trying to tap into the 'gastro pub' movement and failing unfortunately, which is a shame as its in a great location and has everything else going for it. Ultimately just can't recommend for food as everything we ordered was awful - inedibly salty pasta and the chewiest steak I've ever attempted to eat in my life. Being a Pub, the plates get dropped on your table but there's no opportunity for restuarant-style interaction with servers, or customer feedback, even though the prices are equal to those in a medium price restuarant.

Perhaps OK for a pint on a warm afternoon but not much else.
