Durham Arms, Canning Town
FancyaPint?'s review...
Less intrepid pub-goers than us may only have seen this joint from the window of a passing train on the Jubilee Line or the old CrossTown LinkLine between West Ham and Canning Town. As the view from the tracks should make clear, this is essentially a pub on a decaying industrial estate. It's not all bad, even though we entered to hear the landlady tell one of the drinkers to fuck off' in a rather jocular fashion, and despite our discovery of two different versions of Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell' CD on the jukebox. There is, it must be said, an almost remarkably manky beer garden out the back which may just be the location of choice in London to sit and listen to the crackle of overhead power lines. Inside, the array of coins of different nationalities, ages and denominations stuck to several surfaces above and around the bar imply that this pub is favoured by truckers. Nobody else is likely to travel here from afar, though.
