Five Tuns, Stanwell
FancyaPint?'s review...
If we had to go to a pub in an airport - Terminal 5 in this case - we'd hope that it was owned by Geronimo Inns, who have already colonised two other terminals at Heathrow. Spending time in airports isn't everyone's idea of a good time, but thankfully the 5 Tuns does a decent enough job of things - this is probably the best airport pub we've been in. Dominated by a large central bar they have managed to create distinct areas in this otherwise smallish space, with a mix of high-level seating, normal chairs and tables, and even a couple of couches. A striking London skyscape mural successfully distracts from the fact that there are no windows and a bland view out the front. You'll find a pretty good choice of well-kept ales (Sharp's Doom Bar was on when were in last), lager and wine, while the food was reasonably priced and snacky options like pork pies and very nice sausage rolls are available. Saying that, we did wonder whether prices might have been higher if they'd been catering to the captive audience on the other side of passport control. So, overall, not a bad place, and even with the usual traveller detritus (trolleys, overlarge bags, etc.) it doesn't feel as transient as a lot of airport lounges. If this is airport hell, we'll sign up today!
