Russell Hill Road forms part of the busy A23 exit route out of London and the Purley one-way system. With traffic passing at a frenetic pace, it seems almost impossible to find anywhere to only stand and stare but, in the Foxley Hatch, Wetherspoons seem to have succeeded. A little oasis of calm, during the busy day, the Hatch is ideal for a quiet pint and a bite to eat. It seems to have a regular clientele of older drinkers and diners during the day but, we imagine, it attracts a younger crowd in the evenings. Service, when we've called in, has always been bright and efficient. The beers are the usual Wetherspoons selection, plus guests, and the food is nicely prepared and presented from the usual Wetherspoons menus. Prices, for both drinks and food, are very reasonable. We'd be among the first to acknowledge that many Wetherspoons outlets lack proper pub atmosphere, attract some very strange people and can be nightmarish to the child-averse at feeding times. Our experiences in the Hatch haven't yet been too bad, and we'd still recommend it for a lunchtime drink.
