This place hasn't really changed in decades (except for the landlord's retirement). Famous for being famous, small, crowded and one of the few exceptions to our rule that all pubs we include serves pints - they only serve halves and always have. It's got a strong history, French beer on tap alongside the usual suspects, and friendly staff that cope well with the crowds of customers. The atmosphere can sometimes be a bit unfriendly, and similar to that found in a lot of local pubs (for local people) and a clientele that could provide the dictionary definition of "arrogant". But when it's a little quieter - say in the afternoons - it's pretty good. The tiny interior's paneled walls are covered in photos of French film, stage and sport stars from the beginning of the last century, and it does have a bit of the flavour of a Tabac in darkest France. While we have to admire their Gallic resistance to change, this one really is better of an afternoon with the paper and a quiet half.

This is probably the best bar in Soho. It is well run and the crowd can be a bit in your face, but if thats your aim - you will probably meet a pal. It can be busy, so get in about 4.30 find a seat and enjoy.
