George & Vulture, Old Street
FancyaPint?'s review...
The George & Vulture is a rather decent Fuller's pub somewhat off the beaten track just beyond that trendy stalwart Hoxton Square. Thankfully though, they keep things simple and unpretentious here, with the focus on being an honest, well run pub. Until 2007 this was an older style locals' pub, but a refit changed the demographic along with the décor. Our recent evening visit found it to be pleasantly filled with younger locals and flatsharers with a relaxed and amiable atmosphere. Being so close to the De Beauvoir Estate though, we imagine that afternoon sessions could shift the age range upwards somewhat. On the drinks front, you won't find the full range of Fuller's ales, but what they do offer is well kept. Meanwhile, reasonably priced pizza and pasta are on offer to satisfy any hunger pangs. There is also plenty of entertainment on during the week, from the Tuesday quiz night to live music. It is possible to have a few drinks in Hoxton while avoiding bouncer-heavy overpriced bars and certainly the George & Vulture is near the top of that list.

I think the editor of fancyapint has missed a trick with this one.
I was there last night and it was great. You don't come across pubs like this very often. 4 live bands played. All really good. The pub was 'nicely' busy. I ordered two tasty pizzas for friends - we enjoyed a few drinks and the atmosphere was great. The refurbishments don't distract from the fact this is a pub with a lot of history and character. I just hope that not too many people discover this little gem....

A fantastic reburb - this pub was a tired old mans pub with good beer but not a lot else.
It still does a really decent pint of Pride, and I'm told there are acoustic nights, a quiz with live piano afterwards and they had a BBQ there last weekend in the sun. What more could you want from a backstreet boozer in Hoxton?!
