Golden Lion, Sydenham
FancyaPint?'s review...
Now billing itself as the "Sydenham Blues Club", we're guessing they're doing what they can to bring in the punters. To be honest, it's a big, roomy pub which has tried to go back in time a bit, putting back Victorian features (like the bar) where possible. It doesn't always work but that doesn't stop it being a decent traditional pub, particularly in light of the more trendified Dolphin across the road and others in the area. There's good, if somewhat unsurprising, beers on the taps, the most adventurous of which is Harvey's Best. Staff are friendly and quick off the mark, which is always a good thing. It was very quiet when we were in last, although we suspect it's better when there's live music on. Even if you're not interested in the music, the Golden Lion is still a clean and friendly place for a few jars or to while away an afternoon on their terrace.

I've been to the Lion twice to see music. Lovely crowd, very friendly and the music was excellent. My only problem is that I can't find what's on there unless it is listed on the individual artist's web page, and they don't seem to want to answer the phone. Someone help em please.

The Lion is in danger of becoming a good pub! Friday evening blues sessions feature some great bands, while the locals who gather in the back and in the old public bar are a friendly crowd. The Courage Best and the Harveys are served in good condition and the bar staff work hard and remain cheerful even when the pub's at it busiest. Certainly worth a Friday night out.
