Golden Lion, Soho
FancyaPint?'s review...
Spirit Group, the company behind the 'TJ Bernard' pub chain, seem to have got it into their heads that its a good idea to make an increasing number of their pubs virtually identical. Probably something to do with establishing a strong corporate identity, its still not a good sign. So along with refurbishing most of the tired looking TJ Bernard chain, a number of otherwise independent looking pubs are now falling into the mould, which seems to be competing with M&B's 'Nicholson's' chain in the tourist-friendly, faux olde worlde pub category. Anyone who has seen others in this expanding chain will know what to expect: a sympathetic yet modern pub-like interior, ornate exterior and a greater focus on food (although not necessarily a corresponding increase in quality). This one, however, is less inviting than others we know. Due perhaps to its prime location its more of a vertical drinking den and gets very busy at usual times, with service suffering as a result. It also appears more blokey than others we know, lending it a rather unwelcoming atmosphere. There are plenty of better pubs nearby.
