Commercial Street, a wholesalers paradise for so long, is changing. So now within a short stretch down towards Aldgate East we now have no fewer than three bars to choose from. Gramaphone is one of them. The pleasant-sounding name conjures up a moodily lit 1950s style jazz bar, but sadly the decor is actually a bit less exciting than that, even if the exposed brickwork is rather nice. On our Friday night visit, despite plenty of comfy couches and Thai food it was perilously empty here. Perhaps it picks up later on, when they host a variety of music nights in the basement; depending on the night you might encounter indie, electronica, blues, or R'n'B - so choose your night carefully. Its usually open into the wee hours, so expect a small entry free, usually sometime after 9pm. Not a place we wholeheartedly warmed to, if it manages to draw in the punters, it might be OK here. Oh, their name: it is spelt like that.
