Grape and Grain (ex Jack Beards at the Palace), Crystal Palace
FancyaPint?'s review...
Where to start with the Grape & Grain?
Formerly a succession of mediocre pubs, followed by the truly terrible Jack Beards at the Palace, the renamed and refurbished Grape and Grain opened in April of 2009 with the idea to drag this beleaguered place kicking and screaming to the grown-up's table.
Have they suceeded? Yes - and how!
The pub is large and open plan, and has a traditional decor, which includes dozens and dozens of pumpclips - a visual reminder of the selection of ales this pub serves. There's an amazing selection of real ales, which change daily (and often during the day), complemented by a great choice of ciders, and not forgetting the "grape" - a good choice of wines too. And a CAMRA discount! What more can you ask for? Throw in great staff, fast service, a weekly pub quiz, twice weekly live music (a seventeen piece swing band on Monday nights for example), a monthly book group and a gorgeous pub dog, and you have a pub that attracts a great mix of customers. Did we mention the free Wifi, decent food and the Old Pulteney Whiskey they offer?
Food is served Tuesday to Sundays, live music every Sunday and Monday.
Book Group is first Tuesday of every month, pub quiz every Thursday.

This pub really does deserve a look. Given the number of pubs and bars in Crystal Palace, there are a surprisingly large number of places you really wouldn't want to go to. I'd be happy to take my Mum for a Sunday drink here, or my mates on Friday.
A currently friendly manager, a range of good beer have already been mentioned.
The transformation of this pub is probably best summarised by the symbolic replacement of the ubiquitous lads Pool table with a Bar Billiards table.
A worthwhile metamorphosis, indeed.
