Hemingford Arms, Barnsbury
FancyaPint?'s review...
Tucked away in the affluent niche of Barnsbury, the Hemingford Arms can be a pleasant spot for a drink. Its a handsome old pub, festooned with ivy, hanging baskets and window boxes and its cosy interior has a plethora of objects hanging from the ceiling and on the walls: these include a set of hickory golf clubs, film posters, trumpets and the odd Methodist church sign. These appear to be a genuine assortment of oddities rather than, as so often elsewhere, a cynical effort to give the place a forced quirkiness. Five beers are available on the hand pumps in addition to the usual range of draught beer, and reasonable Thai food's on offer. The downside, if there is one, is the service, which can range from adequate to rude. You may also get the odd look from the regulars, but once you're in, it's not a problem and often a conversation can start up, but it can feel a bit intimidating to start with.

I know this pub well and agree with most of the previous comments. However i have noticed on several occasions that certain bar staff like to pour the slop trays into the pint pots when serving the ale- no joke. Obviously this is completely unacceptable and but for this practice going on it would definitely deserve a higher pint rating!

This is the definition of a 5 pinter, it's off the radar, interesting, historic, friendly, full of character. The ivy round the windows and oldschool red glass light fixtures make it quite dark inside - still several orders of magnitude better than any other pub in Islington

This pub deserves a much better rating than a paltry two pints. This is a great pub with good music and good food. If the service was less than hoped for it was probably because they were really busy. I've been to this pub a few times and thought it was one of the best.

i have to agree with most comments and say that this pub is highly under rated. my old local used to be the 5 pint rated Cock and Bottle in W2, and considering the Hemingford Arms has great Thai food, a chilled out and homely atmosphere and great service I must say, the Fancy-a-Pint review is definetely in need of a yearly update! This pub is easily 4 pint rated...try it

I absolutely recommend the Hemmingford Arms, It has a really welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff and great food.
The Friday Night Irish Band has everybodys feet tapping along to the traditional music, there are also great singers on Saturday and Sunday night singing soul and funk and chart music, Its a place where the young and old come together, and a good time is had by all.
