Hoop & Toy, South Kensington
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Hoop & Toy is a pretty decent, traditional-style pub in the heart of South Ken's tourist land. There are four decent, Cask Marque, real ales on the pumps, an average wine list and traditional pub grub - solid, dependable and pretty well priced for the area. It's popular with the locals who work around here and naturally, as it's so close to South Kensington station, it draws in a lot of tourists. The staff are friendly and seem to know a lot of the regulars and the service is reasonably efficient. There's sport on the TV, when it's a big occasion and there's a function room upstairs. A refurbishment, a couple of years ago, tidied the place up but didn't substantially alter the formula - on the very wise premise "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - and it's now one of the relaunched Taylor Walker branded pubs. In many other areas, the Hoop and Toy would be unremarkable for the seasoned pubgoer, as it it doesn't offer anything out of the ordinary - but it does what it does reasonably well. However, here in the tourist mecca of South Ken, that's quite an achievement.
