Horse & Groom, Streatham
FancyaPint?'s review...
Streatham is not blessed when it comes to good quality pubs, and the recent closure of The Horse and Groom appeared to confirm that the choice of watering holes was about to get smaller. Not that the old Horse and Groom was ever going to be missed. That's academic, as The Horse and Groom has reopened, resplendent after a much needed refurbishment. It's got a plush new carpet, comfy chairs, bright lighting, mirrors and cream coloured walls. The pool tables have been replaced and the outside has been given a lick of paint. It's also completely non-smoking (a taste of things to come). Drinkwise - no surprises. Guinness, Kronenbourg, Carlsberg and John Smiths are on offer. Not a real ale in sight. There is the usual pub grub menu, servings were generous (with two main meals for £7.00 on offer) and service was friendly although we did have to stand at the bar for a good few minutes before we were served, and we were the only people there! The staff seem proud of their new bar, and our table was cleaned and wiped regularly, although bizarrely, the cubicle in the gents had its door completely removed. A reminder of the pub's less than glorious past.
