Hoxton Pony (ex Pool Bar), Shoreditch
FancyaPint?'s review...
With a name that sounds like Charlie Brooker came up with it, the generic Pool Bar was refurbished a few years ago as the latest kid on the block, Hoxton Pony. Despite the location there's not a battered Chesterfield in sight - it's all very sleek, shiny and rather tacky. The wave-like reflective bar and the liberal use of mirrors in the more clubby downstairs area are all a little 80s and have aged as badly as we predicted in 2008. Drinks wise, there's plenty of brand-name dropping cocktails and a decent wine list, along with an adequate but eye-wateringly expensive list of bottled beers (London Pride £4.50 anyone?). Meanwhile, if your hunger gets the better of you, the former gawd blimey 'East End' food menu has been replaced with a rash of incomprehensible pretention, described on their website as pushing the "boundaries of fine dining, showcasing new and exciting culinary ideas, interactive art concepts". Apparently a "concept food outlet" has been launched here, which means, in English, overpriced Cajun Spiced Chunky Chips and BBQ Chicken Skewers. We'll resist the attempt to explode with excitement. The decor, food, drink and a hotchpotch of music made for a disjointed experience and it felt like an incoherent and contrived bunch of ideas, all of which left us entirely unsatisfied.
