Aggressive bag searches in the quest for illicit alcohol is never going to endear a reviewer to a bar. Necessary at International Airports, in a pub filled with harmless Hoxtonites at 7pm on a Friday night, it was rather sad. Putting this aside, the bar itself, due to its long, thin, sunken aspect looked like it was built in a motorway underpass or underground car park. This impression was magnified considerably by the large window at the back of the bar, which opened onto the road behind. As such, we were frequently bathed in the blinding light of car's headlights on full-beam as they drove directly towards the bar, before turning 90 degrees around the corner. Topping it off, the music was utterly forgettable, save for the fact it was loud enough for conversations to involve lots of shouting. Despite all this it was pretty busy, so they're clearly doing something right; we just can't figure out what it is.

Why does anyone tolerate the apathetic-to-sneery, 'too cool for school' bar 'service' in this overpriced, overrated dump of a drinking factory, or the woeful state of the loos? As your reviewer rightly stated, the music selection is utterly forgettable, yet loud enough to act as a social irritant. And, given the tendency for more than one of the draught beers to be off at any given time, the management doesn't appear to care very much about keeping the bar stocked properly. That the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen stays in business at all is a testament to Hoxton's enduring hype, and the lack of imagination displayed by the average 'hipster'.

How to find the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen pub

Leave by an Old Street (East) exit and down Old Street, past the fire station and through the traffic lights, take the first left after the Holiday Inn and which leads you to the South West corner of the square. The Hoxton Bar and Grill is the ugly grey block next to Bluu.
