What a jolly pub (sorry). This is a charming old-fashioned place with great beer on the five hand pumps - HopBack Brewery's TEA and St Austell's Tribute were two of the choices when we were in last - and a full contingent of friendly locals. Any rumours that they're a cliquey lot were quickly abolished, we were served promptly by the cheerful staff, and spent the rest of a sunny afternoon here. The beer garden at the back is just the place for contemplating or debating over a couple of jars. It feels like a country pub in many ways, which is no bad thing in our book, and the place feels like it's lived in, rather than a place to pose with a poncey drink. The menu looks good, although we neglected to try it on our last visit. Frankly, it's the sort of boozer where you'd want to spend an afternoon with a pint, and maybe even a friend.

How to find the Jolly Woodman pub

From Beckenham Junction station, turn left and then right at the traffic lights, down the High Street. Turn left into Manor Road, and then take the fifth right into Chancery Lane (a ten minute walk); the pub is on the left.
