This large pub hidden away a few minutes from King's Cross station has recently been taken over by the people responsible for the Three Crowns in Stoke Newington, amongst others. Formerly the Golden Lion, its new name suggests an ironic working class wink at days gone by. Indeed, with a wide variety of live music and club nights, it appears to be aiming for a similar crowd to the Bethnal Green Working Man's Club. Focusing primarily on cocktails at £7 a pop, there were also a couple of standard ales on tap. The decor doesn't hold together entirely well though, not knowing whether it wants to be shabby retro or urban and sophisticated - you'll find some nice murals, plenty of 1970s coffee tables and slouchy couches, along with faux suede circular seating and those obligatory leather cubes. A recent Saturday night visit found it very quiet, with only 4 punters - a far cry from the nearby busy Big Chill House. Perhaps it picks up later, benefiting from the 2am licence, but the music was also rather languid, with a forgettable chill out compilation playing, more suited to a Sunday afternoon, or perhaps a supermarket. As such, we'll have to get back and see if it picks up on the music nights.
