Another old pub rejigged in the modern style (read: wooden floorboards and sofas). It's hardly original, but there are a few unusual touches of decor and it's hard to argue when there's friendly service and a decent selection of drink. There's also a nice pub garden which plays host to some barbecues. It's the sort of place that could easily be a nightmare in the middle of town, but up in leafy North London it's easy going atmosphere is fine for an afternoon of ale-fuelled contemplation. The only reason it receives an average two pint rating is for the food, which based on our last visit is both overpriced and poor quality.

How to find the King's Head pub

Southgate: exit tube and cross the roundabout taking the road called The Bourne. Follow the road as it skirts the side of the park before taking a left down Broad Walk. After about 15 mins walk you'll hit The Green at Winchmore Hill and see the pub on your left hand side. Winchmore Hill BR: exit tube on to Station Road and head toward The Green. The pub is the big building on the corner.
