After the Cricketers closed, the unpopular Powder Monkey which replaced it didn't last very long at all. And neither did the ultra modern, cocktail-heavy, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen designed 'W Lounge' which took Power Monkey's place. We're struggling to keep up with the name changes here and wonder whether the new 'Lani Tiki Lounge' can last longer than a year.

We were right, it didn't last long at all - it's now a chip shop. Maybe that will work better for this site. It's a real pity as the old Cricketers was an excellent local.

The sad history of this pub ought to be an object lesson to developers who want to bugger about with our pub heritage.

The Cricketers, as was, was a fine pub - good beer, a real fire, weekly folk music sessions and a nice convivial atmosphere. It had successfully been doing what it did for donkey's years.

Then someone in Mad Beancounter World decided that all that had to go, in favour of chasing a fast buck. And this is what we got instead - a succession of soulless 'theme bars' that rarely stay open longer than a few months. Tragic.
