The usual Wetherspoon recipe - refit a large commercial property (in this case a bank), serve up cheap beer and food and watch them flock in. Commercially this place must be a success: getting through the local civil servants Monday to Friday and then bus loads of tourists at the weekend. Atmospherically though, it's hardly one of the greats. Being in such a prominent location means it isn't even as cheap as other members of the chain. Survivable if you enjoy Wetherspoon, but hardly worth the bother if you hit it at peak hours.

O.K. it's a Wetherspoon, yes it can be intolerably crowded and loud at times, but this pub has turned in to be where we have most of our dinners. Beer is well kept and they usually have a pretty good selection of real ales. The place is Cask Marque as well. Food is reasonable in price and is usually quite acceptable in quality. Maybe it's not traditional but we have a soft spot for this pub. It provided us a place to drink before the smoking ban. The back of the pub is the most atmospheric if you will. One could do worse.

How to find the Lord Moon of the Mall pub

From Charing Cross, turn left and head for Trafalgar Square. Once there, turn left and head in a clockwise direction around the square until you reach Whitehall - it should be the second left. The pub is literally 20 yards from the corner. From Embankment, turn right out of the station and then right again into Northumberland Avenue and follow it until you get to Trafalgar square. Turn left and then left again into Whitehall. You can't miss it.
