Magpie, Bishopsgate
FancyaPint?'s review...
Located down a side street off Bishopsgate, the Magpie is among numerous pubs primarily catering for the after work crowd around the City. Its nice Victorian interior and efficient and pleasant staff help it to stand out from the competition, and being just off the main drag helps to prevent it becoming quite as packed as many other places, although it was ramping up when we were in there at commuting time. Drinkers have the choice of numerous ales, this being part of the Nicholson's chain, and if you're unsure of your choice, the staff will offer you a sample (although this might be dicey when it's busy). The only drawback for the main bar area is a lack of tables to sit around, with most of the seating provided by high stools around the edge. The other drawback can be the "pedestrian" area outside which can get really crowded with smokers and in warmer weather). One tip: there is an upstairs section which is worth checking out when downstairs gets crowded. It's closed at weekends.
