The Melbourne Arms, situated midway between Woolwich and Plumstead, is quite a reasonable pub. On our visit, a friendly bunch of locals sat at the bar swapping banter and a few jokes. There is no real ale available, just the usual suspects. The Melbourne is very much a sport-watching pub, particularly horse racing and football. Boxing photos on the wall caught our eye too. Neither the best nor the worst pub in the area, this place is worth a look if you're passing by with a thirst.

How to find the Melbourne Arms pub

Woolwich Arsenal is the nearest station, ten to fifteen minutes' walk away. Bring a map as it's not straightforward. From the station, head along Woolwich New Road (passing to the left of General Gordon Place) and then turn left into Brookhill Road. When the road forks, take the left road (Sandy Hill Road) and walk up the hill for a few minutes. The pub is on the left.
