In the shadow of Southwark Cathedral, this one's just off the beaten track - tourists don't necessarily stumble across it, but the local office types know it's there. Last time we were in there was a broad mix of people who'd just knocked off work and others enjoying solitary pints (one bloke was even reading a book in the corner with his pint!). It can be quiet at other times, making it a good place to go if you're trying to avoid the crowds, just make sure you time it right. It's a Nicholson's so you get the fairly decent drink and food the chain knocks out to the punters and there's a large beer garden, too. Early evening (and in colder weather for the smokers, or if the rest of the pub is rammed) in summer will see the garden populated with local workers, but they soon disappear to London Bridge and parts south east. It's also a handy place if you're in transit upriver from the Tower Bridge theme park.

I have to disagree with these comments. I recently had lunch in the Mudlark and was impressed with the generous portions and choice. All three of us had different meals and they were well cooked, tasty and reasonably priced. The view of Southwark Cathedral from the tables by the window is fantastic. The staff were friendly, the food came quickly and plates were cleared away efficiently.

Food was so bad I would have offered to make it myself had they not had something to hide in the kitchen, like Laurel and Hardy. Could well become a cult pub just to experience the rudeness of the boss. In total contrast, the majority of the apologetic staff were lovely.

I've been to this pub for lunch a few times with colleagues and every time we've been, the landlord has been rude and the food we were brought was not what we'd ordered. Terrible place.
