Nell Gwynne Tavern, Strand
On the face of things it's Ye Olde Worlde Pubbe, but, the Nell Gwynne is not as touristy as its location and cosy size would make you think. Sure, it's dimly lit and makes the most of its historical associations, but it still has the feel of a locals' pub. Friendly bar staff and decent fare add up to an honest, busy boozer. Even though it's about the size of a phone box inside, it's usually a better bet than some of the other tourist traps nearby (beware the hellish stairs to the toilets though). A choice of ales, friendly staff and an excellent jukebox (often heard to be playing 90s classics) all add up to make this a cracking little a place, especially out of peak hours. Certainly the Nell Gwynne is one of the more characterful boozers in Central London. As an aside, for a last couple of years we understood that it has been under threat from redevelopment. However, we have recently heard that this risk may have now subsided somewhat. We'll keep you informed of any developments.

We used to really love this place but sadly on the last few occasions we've not enjoyed the place so much.... this is due mainly to some very poor staff! The Nell has always been scruffy (that was part of it's charm), but it's just filthy now and in poor disrepair. Last night we thought we'd give it one last try, got there about 10pm, it wasn't packed but there were quite a few punters in ... beer choice was limited only Bombardier or Courage Best, I had a Bombardier (it wasn't great), we stuck some tunes on the Jukebox with a view to stay til closing. Bell went at 22:45, by 22:50 the jukebox had been switched off, the bar stools were on the bar, we'd had our feet whollopped by the broom a dozen times! Needless to say it's the last time we'll bother now!

I used to really love this pub - the customers and the general character of the place haven't changed, it's still a sometime gem, albeit a worn one! Sadly, some of the staff who have been there for a long time, who really made the place and made people feel welcome, have gone, and the manager remains, and he is still as miserable as ever... bring back the glory days please.
