Staunchly traditional (but not olde worlde) and flying in the face of all the style bars peppered around the area, the Nelson's Retreat is very much a locals' pub - heavily influenced by nearby estates, we fear. The beer won't get CAMRA members foaming at the mouth as everyone seems to drink lager; and likewise the food won't set any epicurean pulses racing. But it does the job for the locals and its popularity on a Saturday afternoon is testament to this. However, you should know there's a 20p surcharge during big screen pay-per-view events and after 11pm.

Rude management - wouldn't even supply a glass of water despite eating lunch there with 6 friends. Said they were not legally obliged to do so!
