The Old Ship Inn occupies the outside of one of the Thames' more picturesque bends, in view of both Chiswick Bridge to the right and Hammersmith Bridge to the left and its position means that on weekends it gets very crowded so beware, the elevated terrace and surrounding grassy areas are all but standing room early for anyone but the very earliest riser. We last came here on a weekday night and found the place clean, friendly and reasonably empty. Whereas previously the ale selection was lacking, they now have 3 well-kept, cool beers on the pumps (Young's Bitter, Bombardier and Wandle). The food was reasonably priced and well cooked but, as with a lot of places of this ilk, it lacks real pub character concentrating more on trying to look classy (complete with a Pimm's on tap at the bar (literally), a caged wine-cellar under the staircase and a deli-counter selling pork pies, scotch eggs and cheeses!). Although the Old Ship hasn't gone to the extremes of some gastropubs (where the bar is virtually non-existent), we'd prefer to recommend this as somewhere to go to eat, rather than drink.

By the time we got to our fourth pub, the Old Ship Inn, we were getting the flavour, but our visit here was short and not particularly nice. Very limited beer selection on offer - is it a Youngs pub? No Youngs Special available. Just us 2 customers echoing inside a large pub; and the visible kithen space seemed obtrusive. Judging from the picture lots of people must like the place, but not me.

From Ravenscourt Park: Exit the tube onto Dalling Road, turn right and walk down to King Street. Cross King Street and turn right, taking a left down Rivercourt Road. Rivercourt Road crosses the A4 and then your on to Upper Mall. Turn right and walk to the pub. From Hammersmith: head for Hammersmith Bridge, turn down onto the footpath and keep walking. You'll come to the pub after a 15 minute walk or so.
