This fairly traditional-looking pub hasn't changed a great deal, and still works at catering for the arty and studenty-types who inhabit the area, and gets pretty packed of an evening. We remember there used to be a large blackboard listing the many ales that were on sale in a previous incarnation of this place, but that has sadly gone. The beer has, if anything got better, with convenient tasting notes in front of the real ale taps - a good sign they know what they're doing with it. They've also got the usual collection of euro lagers, Franziskaner Weissbeer and the black stuff which, when combined with their short but reasonably priced wine list and an emphasis on shooters and cocktails means that just about everyone should be catered for. The menu's not as gastro as it used to be, and they seem to be concentrating on good, reasonably priced food with good ingredients and we can't fault them for that, particularly in the current climate. The only criticism one might make of the place is the incredible noise which can emanate from the clientele and lots of hard surfaces for it to bounce off of. If you've popped in here to do the crossword or read an existential novel, wear ear defenders. Alternatively, if you can't take the noise, try the upstairs room, it's often quite empty, although even that can get noisy at times.

Nice light ales ruined by being served way too cold, a total lack of atmosphere (Saturday afternoon, and we were the only people there), and a rude and stroppy barman who shouted at us to sit where he pointed, not the otherwise exactly the same table we had been heading for. Won't be back again, which is a pity, because it *looked* like a nice pub.
