After a change of ownership and a fair a bit of chopping and changing in terms of its staffing, ambience, decor and so on this place has settled down to being a slightly out-of-the-way place that caters for the local office workers (including employees of the Telegraph and Google; if you want to see the interface between old and new media head to the bar and see if you can spot the difference).

The presence of the big screens and sometime Friday night bouncers (why? it's hardly a riotous night spot. The last major trouble was probably back in Lord Lucan's day), hint at a place trying to appeal to a market that isn't really there, but these count only as minor irritants. The pub is still worth a visit if you're in the area. It's far enough away from the main tourist drag to avoid being overrun and busy enough to avoid being silent. Luckily the landlord seems to know what he's doing, with a good choice of regularly rotated real ales on offer, which is, after all, the pub's raison d'etre.

Definitely improved in recent years, as evidenced by the reasonably sized crowd of punters during the midweek session I just spent there. Can't comment on the food as we were booked elsewhere, but the Black Sheep ale definitely hit the mark. It's quite small, with traditional styling, Taylor Walker food and drink menu, guest ales, bar staff service was good enough to avoid frustration at peak demand. Get there early if you want a table. We didn't try to drink outside so can't comment on the bouncer/neighbours issue. Conclusion: not one I'd go out of my way to visit, but one I choose if in the neighbourhood.

Previous review mentioned the bouncer. He's not there because of the customers. The neighbours are paranoid about drinking on the pavement even down to taking photographs.
