Woolwich is changing fast with wrecking balls aloft and the Olympics due in 2012 (shooting in Woolwich: yep). Pubs here are changing too. Woolwich has not known decent drinking establishments for some years - the whole area has been under a cloud for a while. Rose's (confusingly also known as the Prince Albert) has always offered hope on the pub front, though; decent booze (three guest ales) helps. It's an old-school boozer that won't change its ways: further from the Boden-clad pinot noir matriarchs of, say, Battersea, it'd be hard to find. Rose's is a no-frill boozer that's the best in the area right now - a Young's pub is opening June 2010 across the road at Woolwich Arsenal. Competition can only be good for the local pub scene.

Old school boozer with all of the old school faults as well as the old school traditions.

Its long since time that Woolwich saw a few improvements in the pub scene.

Sadly, I don't see this happening. The only succesful businesses in this district remain Chicken outlets, pawnbrokers and halal butchers.

How to find the Prince Albert (Rose's) pub

From Woolwich Arsenal station, cross General Gordon Place and walk down Powis Street (more or less straight ahead of you) for a few minutes - it's the main pedestrianised shopping street in Woolwich. Turn right into Hare Street (at Dorothy Perkins) and the pub is on your left, near the end.
