The Prince of Wales has been gastrofied, but it's not been a bad thing - quite the contrary. It's got a magnificent collection of pewter tankards, a fairly small zinc bar, a lovely rail clock on the wall over the connecting door to the back bar and dining area and green banquettes in the front room with blue enamelled number plates over some of the seats - giving an impression of a train station waiting room at the very least. It was a bit quiet for a Wednesday lunchtime, and the fact that tables in the back were set for lunch didn't help much either. The regulars and local workers who did appear seemed comfortable, which is really what you want for a local pub. The menu doesn't throw up any real surprises in the gastro era, although some of the mains are a bit pricey - 10 for a burger! There are three ales on the taps, promise of a good wine list and the almost de rigueur nowadays handmade scotch eggs.

This was for a while a great gastro pub. The food was excellent, the staff couldn't have been friendlier, it took dogs and it had a great mix of pub, pub/restaurant and restaurant, depending on what mood you were in. Lately though the food prices have gone up, the burgers (which used to be awesome) have started coming out cool and the staff have become a bit arrogant. The owners don't seem to be around as much and it's lost its welcoming, 'can't do enough to help' approach. Last time we were in there they were piping some very loud eastern european music through the speakers in the ceiling. One couple had already complained about it but were told no other music was available. Amazingly they didn't get the message in spite of the fact that it was 1.30pm on a Sunday lunchtime and there were only four people in the room where the music was playing loudest! Usually that room is packed by that time on a Sunday. Shame because as I say, it was for a time a great pub!
