The Royal Inn on the Park is a popular place, located by one of the main entrances to Victoria Park and in one of the nicest bits of Hackney - estate agents may call this area Hackney Village but they're not fooling anyone, it's still E9. The pub serves a better than average range of beers on the hand pumps - Fuller's Pride, Gale's HSB, and regular guest ales, a range of continental beers on tap - Litovel, Rothaus Weissbier, Leffe, Palm, Aspall's, interesting bottled beers and a decent wine list. There's a pretty comprehensive food menu too and a new, separate dining area although you can eat anywhere in the pub. There's plenty going on too, from swing dance and life drawing classes, to an excellent weekly quiz and monthly comedy nights. There's been a major refurbishment here which has massively expanded the capacity of the pub - it needed it, but we feel it's still not quite finished. The dining extension, which is OK in summer, looks and feels a little cold and frosty in less clement times. And we feel there's still work to be done on the layout of the main part of the pub - there's too much furniture, not enough room to circulate and the Victorian cosiness (welcome in winter) of the old place has been lost. Hopefully, this is only temporary - we will see.

Visited on a sunny Sunday afternoon when the place was at full throttle; staff were coping well and served up an excellent pint of Pride. Fully agree with the point about too much (uncomfortable) furniture, which at several points restricts circulation in this large and lofty pub. What could be an easy pleasure becomes an irritant - one that is really easy to fix and which one hopes soon is.

7 people booked in for food, 7 people walked out after cancelling the order & getting our money back. The bar staff have no idea what they are doing, the kitchen does not know what it has got or hasn't got. Shocking, I've never had service like that before. There is a fantastic Italian across the road, go there, we will be going there again............we won't ever be going back to the Inn On The Park

We were recommended this pub by a friend for the Sunday lunch which is great... if you're a meat eater. For vegetarians however the choice was very thin, only one main option (and what kind of person is happy with polenta while everyone else enjoys a Sunday roast?!) and the staff seemed to lack much understanding of what vegetarian catering involves. The waitress explained that they did do a "veggie version" of the roast but that it was without gravy as that was meat based and no potatoes as these were cooked in duck fat. So that'll be a plate of vegetables then, right.

My boyfriend had this option as he isn't vegetarian but doesn't like meat much and he was charged the same price as the full version (£13!!) and didn't even get any extra helpings of potatoes etc.

This kind of thing is really poor in my view and just plain lazy in this day and age when it is so easy to provide a vegetarian alternative to meat.

I was really surprised and dissapointed to find that there are still supposedly 'young' places where vegetarian catering is still considered to be the 'poor relation'. And in London of all places!

great location right next to victoria park and a decent selection of beers but quite possibly the worse bar staff in London - uninterested, slow and seemingly resentful of your custom, like spoiled teenagers who have been asked to clean their rooms.

Really nice pub. However , last year when I visited , my evening was ruined by some thick Brummy gurning at me and his halfwitted ginger boyfriend who kept on talking about squirrels.

I miss the days of Jay and Ant when the food was hearty fare, the beer was kept tip top and kids and dogs a lot more controlled!!!! This is one pub where the smoking ban has really affected the customer base. I have 3 children under five but dont let my kids run riot as they frequently do here. And the mother and toddler groups I know for a fact have put off the diverse group of locals who used to love this place. All in all, a sad state of affairs.
