The Royston is a giant, suburban pub which suffered one of those identikit, taste-free refurbishments which makes it look like the set of a daytime talk show. Everything is clean and tidy, indicating the refurb was recently done, but it's hard to tell as it already looks quite dated. A standard slew of cooking lagers is complimented by cheap, cheap food. We recommend against the ales on offer; there's not much call for ale in Chingford and the quality suffers accordingly. There's a large outside area at the front, as well as an rather nice grassed back garden, while comedy nights are now making an appearance and the quiz night is pretty good. The overall atmosphere is less, shall we say, 'exuberant' than other pubs towards Chingford Mount but, all said, it's probably really one for the locals.

This pub needs closing down and reopening under the management of The Bell, Walthamstow. There they have turned around a disused pub to something great for the area. Chingford needs similar as there is nothing as yet. The Royston is a great building with the potential to be a great pub or eatery, but please shut it down as it is an embarrassment to the area.

Nearest tube is Walthamstow, a bus ride away. Catch the 97 or 215 bus and get off a couple of stops after the large roundabout. The pub is on the left.
