Shortlands Tavern, Bromley
FancyaPint?'s review...
Just under a year ago we had the unwanted task of downgrading the local of one of our reviewers. We are now delighted to report that the Tavern has been promoted back up to its former rating. It's not the high three-pinter it was in 2008, but it'll do for now. Standards had been slipping alarmingly and whilst it's not quite as spick and span as it was three years ago, it's certainly better than the nadir of the late May Bank Holiday in 2010. On that blazing hot day, eau de doner wafted through the bar (it was the middle-aged barmaids who were "dining"!), dogs ran amok, tables were left unwiped and (allegedly) noses were powdered by several patrons in the gents'. Beer-wise, the Adnam's Explorer is the pick. On the last couple of visits it's tasted better than it did last year and - in a break with tradition - they've actually lowered the price to a more respectable GBP 3.25. They've also hired an engaging Scottish barman of late, who is always good for a chat as he's pulling pints. It's getting back to being the place once described by a first-time visitor as "charming and homely - like having a pint in your nan's living room". Last, but absolutely not least, the tropical fish and hanging baskets remain as noteworthy as ever - the latter deservedly winning a high commendation in a local "in-bloom" competition a while back.

Very comfortable pub, with a good cellar. Friendly staff and a really nice landlady to make you feel welcome. The over-25s policy gives it a very laid-back atmosphere where you can enjoy a pint or two at your leisure (unlike most places in the centre of Bromley).
This pub would be my choice for watching the World Cup next month. And if you're a dog lover like me, this would be a bonus!
