A refurbishment of this Whitehall pub in 2008 seems to have changed very little in terms of atmosphere, decor or clientele. Step through the doors and you'll find this is a large scale chain pub that battles it out with the Wetherspoon across the road for the coach party vote. After work it looks like a Civil Service convention, while there will always be plenty of tourists in a location like this. Other pubs nearby also have this mix of clientele but the Silver Cross just doesn't feel as cohesive as other nearby places; the size, for one, counts against it, as does the relative lack of natural light. The long bar has inconveniently placed pillars but at least the service is OK. There are a few ales on tap (major brewers only need apply) but you know who they're catering for when you see that the menu offers the "Big Ben Burger".
