The Spread Eagle has had a tumultuous life in the last decade or two. Way back, it was a Watney's pub, then a pretty rough local, it turning into a non-glossy strip joint, then becoming a very rough and ready Hoxton bar/club and finally metamorphosing into a darker, more sophisticated one. That was a while ago. Nowadays it's a pretty average sort of place for these and, apart from the decadent ceiling decoration and the somewhat surprising urinals, you'll find it a decent enough place, serving a typical range of beers, lagers, wines, spirits and cocktails to a pretty typical Shoreditch crowd.

A pleasant enough place to neck a few pints while touring Shoreditch, regular lager offer on tap with some bottled beers and a short cocktail list but decent prices and friendly staff, mostly Brazilian girls. A neon fairground heart flashes in one corner and the guys loos are a scream but not too trendy to deter the casual drinker or anyone looking for friendly crowd and some good music.

I must have walked past The Spread Eagle a hundred times and never so much as looked in the window until a friend of mine suggested we meet there.
What a pleasant surprise.
Located in a prime spot on The Kingsland Road side of the junction, The Spread Eagle offers the closest thing to a local I have visited on the strip in quite some time. The furniture is eclectic and quirky, the lights were dim and the candles were lit. The barmaid was singing along to the Rock 'n' Roll music I assume she had selected and offered us advice on the happy hour options and a chat about what was on near-by despite clearly being rushed off her feet.
There was somewhere to sit and the bar was cosy without being stifling and there were tables outside offering a prime spot to people watch and have a smoke should you feel that way inclined.
I'll be back!
