The Albert, Bow
At a time when the East End continues to change with speed and luxury flats are popping up all over Bow, Roman Road remains. The tatty market and many of the nearby pubs are a close approximation of bygone times. The Albert - situated at the head of the market - is a local geezer's pub with decor to match. Having closed in 2008 we assumed it was a gonner, but it actually just received a light makeover and carried on much as before. A small back yard, football and various degrees of live music (from karaoke upwards) do their best to bring in the locals and it seem to be working, as the atmosphere was lively on our Saturday afternoon visit. Perhaps not one to trek over to Bow for, it is a good place for a refresher.

How to find the The Albert pub
From Mile End tube exit left, cross the road and turn right onto Grove Road. Walk up and eventually you'll reach Roman Road. Turn right and the Albert is a 10 minute walk up on the left, just as Roman Road market begins.
