Named after a local soldier (who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in the First World War), we would love to tell you this one breaks with the Wetherspoon mould and is a classy pub with a vibrant air. But... it's not. It's just another Wetherspoon shop conversion, with an atmosphere that swings from edgy to just downright depressing. The side room of the pub aims for a more refined Library feel; though, given the air of this one, we half expected the books on the shelves to be those empty spines you'd find in an MFI. We're intrigued to note that there was another Wetherspoon about 500 metres further up Green Lanes. That one has now shut - was it really worse than this one? Unless you really are strapped for cash in Palmers Green or have a deep interest in those awarded the VC, there's not a lot here for you.
