For a long time, The Alwyne Castle was a pretty average boozer - mostly serving the nearby estates and Arsenal fans on match days, but it eventually got a makeover and it's been gastrofied for a while now. It was inevitable, we guess, and the mostly young clientele seem to like it that way. You'll recognise it as a fairly typical 21st century conversion: polished wood floor, comfy sofas, gastropub menu. But that said, it has kept the great fireplace and mercifully decided against polished chrome fittings. It's probably a sign of the times that what we'd have thought was paying over the odds for a meal a few years ago now seems a bargain. How things change. The service is friendly enough, albeit sometimes pitifully slow, and there are several ales on tap, along with a good choice of lager. It's a big place, with three large rooms, including a conservatory, but the uncomfortably laid-out furniture can make it feel awkward and getting a bit of space for you and your friends can be trying at times. It is more relaxed earlier in the week, while Saturday night can find it verging on uncomfortably full; and on match days you'll find the pub absolutely heaving and your drink will come in a plastic, not a glass.

Came here in the summer. Saturday afternoon, blazing hot, perfect conditions for a pub with a substantial outdoor area.

Bar extremely understaffed for what was obviously primetime. Very slow service. Then the real ales started running out. There were served too cold anyway.

With basic management, this pub could and should be superb. Instead, its owners seem purely interested in running it with no corner uncut, relying on its potential for passing trade to make it work. What a waste.

Extremely slow bar service, I actually had to leave the bar without a drink on Saturday night because the bar staff kept missing me. Absolutely ridiculous! The bar tender kept turning round and shouting 'who's next?'...a sure sign that she has 0 observation skills.

The service in this pub is so bad - used to use this at least twice a week, havent been back for a while but it is still amazingly slow - why do staff go and collect glasses when people are waiting to be served!

Real shame as it is a really lovely pub - great food, great location - come on guys sort it out.

inexplicably and consistently terrible service - some of the least effort ive ever seen bar staff make. Not just a one-off either, used to go in every few months mainly for convenience of location but its never changed, have finally given up. Avoid.
