The adjectives "cavernous" and "decent" are rarely to be found together in descriptions of pubs, but we may have found one that just about manages it. The Anglers is indeed a pretty big place, but not totally lacking in atmosphere as one might expect. The bar had a very decent selection of beers, not just the usual real ales (Pride, IPA) but also a number of tramp-friendly strength Belgian beers, including Chimay, Duvel and the like. Friendly staff too who were only too happy to describe the selection of Kettle Chips they had on offer. The Anglers has a slightly trendy suburban feel to it - old skool space invaders table games and Formica table tops compete with comfy leather sofas a la gastropub. It appears to attract a range of young professional marrieds with their kids. Indeed, the place is pretty child friendly and we spotted a play ground out the front. Food was served at the bar, and in the summer months there's a barbecue out the back (or the front, depending from where you approach it). Combined with a good location on the river, it's not a bad place to enjoy a couple of pints on a summer afternoon.

Possibly the largest pub I've frequented by the riverside, the Anglers is regarded as Fuller's Jewel in the Crown by some. Even though they seem to have had a very shaky time recently with management problems, food service (a very small and understaffed kitchen for the size of the place?) and staff; they seem to have put most of these gripes behind them.
This is definitely a meeting place; for locals, the staff based at Teddington studios, anyone who has children to tow and people who don't mind some food which would probably not be classed as standard pub grub fare. Retaining a balance depending on which demographic of patrons turn up on a day or evening boggles the mind.
There are several sections to this cavernous bar to accommodate differing sizes of groups turning up. In the summer the beer garden is really close to breaking point and it'll take you ages to get served at the bar, and on Sundays, get there early or you'll be waiting ages to get some food.

Other than being over-run with families on Sundays, this is a pretty good sticking place. The numerous cask ales were kept in good condition, but some of the bar staff seemed to be on another planet when I was waiting at the bar far too long when there was nobody else there to be served and the outside tables had the last five groups' glasses still balancing awkwardly on the edge of the table.

The Anglers in teddington has a perfect location on the river, close to teddington lock. They have a good selection of both beers and wines. A huge beer garden, accomodating at least 300 people, with a good play area for children. It has recently been tastfully refurbished. However, they are missing a trick with both their food and their service. The staff don't seem to be able to cope with the large numbers of people they seem to attract to the fine location.

Upon arrival, all seems pleasant, untill it comes to ordering food. The menu is pretty standard, offering fish finger sanwiches, and roast dinners. But when I arrived with two other people, on Sunday 21st of march 2010,we were told that there was a 20 minute wait before we could even order our food. On talking to other customers, we found that they had been waiting for nearly an hour previously. It was a nice sunny day, perfect for eating outside in their beer garden.

Unfortunately, for us the wait was too long, so we decided to leave after 1 drink.

The general apathy concerning the delay, was not acceptable for a pub wishing to cater for families and people wishing to enjoy such a lovely day in a fine location.

What I feel this pub needs, is good management, not only behind the bar, but in the dining area. It's not enough to sit pretty by the river and flatter to deceive. What a shame to look so good but deliver so poorly.

Do not visit this place for Sunday lunch! It may look like a nice river-side pub, but it is a total disaster area, food-wise. We left, unfed, 1 3/4 hours after ordering. People were taking food back all around us. The day was pretty much ruined. Zero pints!
