The Antelope (ex-Jack Beard's), Tooting
FancyaPint?'s review...
For a former Jack Beard's to transform itself into the runner up for Time Out's gastropub of the year award is a pretty dramatic turnout around. And even if you were not inclined to take Time Out's judgement as infallible (we haven't tried the food yet, so we can't comment on that aspect of it), it would be hard to argue that it wouldn't be a change for the better. And indeed it is. This new incarnation offers plenty for anyone after a good spot for good drinking and conversation - even the most negative assessment of the place would be to describe it as a nice enough (if slightly yuppified) place with good beer. Certainly, there's a good choice of both real ales and continental lagers on tap; and the range of wines and spirits seems pretty much what you would expect in somewhere that lays such stress on its foodie credentials. There's also plenty of space for pretty much everyone. But even on relatively quiet evenings (such as on our visit) it didn't feel empty or desolate due to a clever use of space. One thing to note that some will regard as a positive and some as a negative: there is plenty of child friendly paraphernalia dotted around the place. Whether this turns Sunday lunchtimes, say, into a good time for everyone, family-centric events or hellish nurseries remains a moot point for us just now.

I've become a bit of a fan of the Antelope. The food is excellent, the service friendly and the beer is good, offering a nice choice of ales. It's a huge place but doesn't feel that way. Tooting used to be a terrible place for pubs, but now it's a great place to be.
