It used to be the Bridge Tavern, before it was given a rather pretentious Italian variant on that name; now it's the Betsy Smith. In line with the creeping gentrification of Kilburn, this is a still very much a gastrofied place (albeit one offering more traditional English fare rather than the pizzas offered in its Latin incarnation). A glance at the pub's publicity* suggests that the management might have designed it in line with some sort of self-consciously whacky theme with regards to the design and some of the cocktails on offer - the kindest thing we can do is to affect not to have noticed it. A sign on the door suggested the Sunday roast would be an ideal hangover cure, the subdued atmosphere on our Sunday afternoon visit may be attributable to the fact that most of the other customers were availing themselves of the cure, but the fact the seating towards the back of the place (the burrow as they like to call it) was plunged into semi-darkness did not help. Friday and Saturday nights are probably a lot noisier and livelier, but the long opening hours suggest the managers are keen to hoover up lunchtime and even breakfast time trade. The Betsy Smith has only been open for a few weeks, so the place may yet find its feet; probably once it stops trying too hard.
