The Bowler, Clerkenwell
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Bowler occupies a corner spot on a Clerkenwell back street. It's not the prettiest of buildings, not helped by having "THE BOWLER PUB AND KITCHEN" painted in big white capitals along one side. Once inside this pub, the layout struck us as slightly unusual. Each of the two doors lead to a high-ceilinged room, one more for drinking and one more for dining. The bar is located in an area at the back of the building in a lower-ceilinged section with skylights. In addition, the kitchen is quite near one of the doors so it faces you as you enter. The decor could be described as eclectic, a mix of stuff you find in pubs, although not always in the same pub. It wasn't particularly cosy, although having the day's newspapers in a rack was a nice touch. The selection of drinks looked pretty good and included three real ales with a well-kept Brakspear. We didn't try the food but the pricing looked reasonable from £7.50 to £9.50 for mains. All in all not a bad pub, perhaps best enjoyed with a crowd for a few post-work drinks.

A friend of mine works round the corner from this pub/bar so met her there Friday night and was impressed with the music and atmosphere as I came straight from work I ended up grabbing a bite to eat a steak sandwich with sweet potatoe fries which was lovely. Also at £6.50 a cocktail it was a great place to stay till late drinking and chatting.

This Pub is one of my favourites. Here I can always guarantee a good cold pint served by friendly staff! The food is also a must try if you go, specially the fish and chips! The pub got two rooms, one more for sitting down and eating and one that is more like a lounge. They got a good verity of beers and they got real ale! It’s a perfect place go to after work with your colleagues.

The Bowler is just what I want from a pub! I come here a lot and can always guarantee to get a nice cold pint – You can really tell they are looking after the place. The food is also really good and always fresh. I am strongly recommending the Fish and Chips. The staff is very friendly and helpful, even a busy day like Burger Wednesday (£5 a burger!!).
