The Britannia, Kensington
FancyaPint?'s review...
One of the earliest conversions that Young's did to its pubs, turning it from traditional pub into a style bar with beer, this one's relatively unchanged since that refurb. That said, only the conservatory was set aside for dining when we were in last, so who knows, we're hoping it's changed for the better, putting more emphasis back on it being a pub. With decent beer, friendly enough staff and locals, it does a lot right and we'd have to say that It's okay, but hardly one we'd go out of our way for. On a historical note, we've recently discovered it was named after a brewery that once stood in Allen Road, The Britannia. Who'd have thought?

This was a lovely looking pub from the outside - but of course they had to paint the front gastro-matt-black. Inside, the stripped-back refurb and heavyhanded over-furnishing was equally unnecessary and has in my view spoiled what was quite a pleasant - though never outstanding - comfortable local pub of a sort virtually extinct in this area. The beer used to be quite good - it's now very poor indeed. I would have given the old version 3.5 / 5.0, but now it's very much a 2.0.

Asthetically this is a nice pub, but the prices are much higher than any other pubs nearby and the beer was terrible- it was as flat and tasteless as a glass of tapwater. The service was pretty dire too- when I returned the first pint, the batman grabbed the glass and thrust another badly pulled pint in my direction. Didn't stay for another and won't be returning.
