The T & J Bernard signage is still intact, but with this pub now firmly tied to the restaurant opposite, this "bar and restaurant" is just that - a restaurant that serves drinks. What you'll first notice on entering is the interior: a makeover has attempted to pack a mix of contemporary styles into a small, one-roomed space. The leather settles have gone, with tables (mostly set for lunch) taking up most of the space, though a ledge does make its way through the middle of the room for vertical drinkers to lean an elbow upon. The new owners have tried to make this as grand a space as possible. As for the food and drink on offer, gone is the old pub's reliance on real ales: apparently the spare pump for a guest ale which sits alongside the London Pride pump fighting for space next to premium lagers like Peroni. The food looks as good as you'll get in a pub in these parts, and for City folk wishing to fill up before a 9 o'clock meeting, this one opens at 8am.
