As the closest pub to Crystal Palace football club, it's appropriate that the Clifton often mirrors the club's ups and downs - to the extent that it came within a whisker of closing down completely in mid 2009. Constantly changing owners and managers had taken the place rapidly down-table over the past few years but now it looks like someone who knows and cares about pubs has stopped the rot. Matchdays are still the big earner and the friendly bar staff, decent priced Pride and various lagers and a not-before-time general clean up are wooing back the punters to something close to the jolly sardine-tin ambience of the good times. The new management are also trying to build up business on other days, introducing quizzes and karaoke. It's a fair sized place with a potentially excellent patio area outside and no other pub within about ten minutes walk, so it's always been a puzzle why it had never drawn much local trade. Good luck to the new bosses - now if they could do something about that football club...
