The Cock Tavern, Walthamstow
FancyaPint?'s review...
Not unattractive from the outside (despite the wooden slatted blinds which always look wrong in pubs) the Cock Tavern is nonetheless a rather standard, slightly run-down boozer. It's not often we come across places where we think it would benefit from a deep clean, but the smoking ban has highlighted how many people must've once smoked in here. The back is dominated by a giant footy screen (at least when a match is on) and the usual pool, darts and fruit machines make up the other entertainment. We've only visit during the daytime on a weekend, so we've always found it pretty popular, with a mix of E17 residents: market folk, older blokes, shoppers and regulars. Night times here (which are accompanied by a late licence) probably offer up a different experience to the one we had.

recently refurbished a lot of money has been spent on it and residents were excited about the improvements. Sadly the improvements have not improved the experience. It is cleaner with the same limited drink selection, wine selection red or white choice of two. Real ale two pumps always off. No food. No noisey disco at weekends but noisey music echoes from tiny speakers around the pub because of the wooden floors and there is not one corner where you can get away from the earsplitting volume that it can be played at. The pub is run exactly the same way it was before refurbishment and it has so much potential to be a popular pub. You could light the fire and put the new sofa's round it move or get rid of pool table, turn the volume down on the jukebox or have a quiet area away from speakers. Offer food, create an imaginative wine list and don't let the ale run out. The pub has lost customers since the refurbishment because somehow the community spirit left it with the lack of choice and noise that customers have to shout over to have a conversation. Not somewhere for a quiet pint if you can get one from the pump.
